Chapter 6
The Return
(getting back to chapter 3)
Ok, now that we’ve gotten all that straightened out, we can get back to the story. Let’s see, I was talking about memories and experience. Oh yeah, I had mentioned that the brain sifts through all the information our senses take in each day, and sorts it out, subconsciously, mostly while we sleep. Let’s elaborate on that shall we. So, I have always thought that dreams were a sort of by-product of this sifting and sorting. Which can explain why a lot of our dreams don’t seem to make much sense. That is because our dreams are really just visual bits and pieces of our memories and experiences that are being sorted through and stored accordingly by the brain. Most of what our senses take in has already been recorded into memory, seeing as we usually do the same or similar things each day, like work-school-shopping and so on. Sometimes, something different happens during our usual daily routine, perhaps we take a different route to work, or we do something that differs from the norm. That something different can sometimes get incorporated into our dreams, simply because the brain has a new memory/experience to record into permanent storage. Now remember, only the strongest part of the new memory / experience gets recorded directly, the rest gets recorded indirectly, or is regarded as useless information and is discarded/deleted by the brain. As an example of this, I was going about my usual daily routine one day, which included going the local convenience store for cigarettes. While I was there, I ran into an old friend that I hadn’t seen in a few years, which brought any older, indirect memories of him to the surface. When I went to sleep later that night, he showed up in my dreams. He wasn’t the main part of my dreams that night, but I distinctly remember he played a part. I believe that if I had not run into him at the store, he would not have been a part of my dreams that night. The same principal applies if you suddenly remember something, or think about something that you haven’t thought of in a long while. The possibilities are there that whatever it is you thought of may be incorporated into your dreams.
